About

Redfern Instruments are made by Joe Vercoe.

Having played guitar from a young age, I was inspired to make my first guitar at age 16. This lead me to search a place to learn the craft and improve my skills.

I studied at the Newark School of Guitar Making, where I received a first-class degree with honours. During this time, I tried to spread my knowledge over the different sides of fretted instrument construction. Throughout my time at Newark, I made classical, steel string, and archtop guitars, along with various sizes of mandolin. This approach now allows me to adapt and design around the clients needs.

I currently live and share a workspace with other instrument makers, giving me the opportunity to continually learn and collaborate on projects. At present, I enjoy playing 5-string banjo and mandolin with love for both old-time and Irish trad. Sheffield is great for both of these things!
